There are many people in your same position wondering how they’re going to get rid of fruit flies. The first thing you want to do if you haven’t already is find out why they’re there. If you’re leaving fruit out start putting them into the refrigerator. Many other things attract fruit flies like empty wine glasses and open pop bottles. Make sure everything that you know of is put away before you move on to completely get rid of the fruit flies.
The cheapest and easiest solution to get rid of fruit flies is to go to your cupboard and get the vinegar out. Follow these simple steps:
- Get a cup and fill it about 1/4 of the way up with the following ingredients
- dishwashing liquid (Any will do)
- Some Water
- 1 Splash of Vinegar (Red Wine Vinegar or Cider Vinegar will do)
- Place some plastic wrap over top of the cup and secure it with a rubber band
- Poke a couple small holes in the plastic wrap – This allows the fruit flies to fly in and become trapped
- Make sure you place each cup where the infestations are occurring!
There are a couple alternative methods to this as well. If you don’t have all of these ingredients (which I’m sure most of you will) you can try and get away with only using the vinegar. This method alone has been know to eradicate some mild fruit fly problems. If these solutions don’t fix your problem you may have what are known to be drain flies which come up through your kitchen sink.
Please continue reading how to get rid of drain flies. First you’ll want to fill your sink with lots of ice. Pour liquid detergent in and make sure you add some water to it. Next you’ll want to flip on the disposal system and let it grind the ice down. You’ll notice a black like sludge that will come up which is normal which usually comes back up into your sink briefly. This will go back down but you may need to run a little water to help it.
After you have successfully gotten rid of the drain flies you can continue to do preventive maintanence to make sure they don’t return. You can pour some bleach down your drain once and awhile to prevent the drain flies from coming back. As an alternative to the bleach you may also find pouring boiling water down your drain a big help too.
