Review

There has been a lot of controversy about a new book coming out called “Maggie goes on a diet” by Paul Kramer. The book is about a 14 year old girl who is “chubby” and gets picked on at school. She eats a lot of unhealthy foods because she is sad, but then she realizes she can change by eating healthy and exercising. Maggie then looses a lot of weight and becomes her schools star soccer player. She is more confident in herself and has a very positive self-esteem.

On ABC New’s “Good Morning America”, author Paul Kramer defended himself in saying this book is supposed to send a positive message to young kids to live a healthy lifestyle. He also stated that he never imagined this book to get such a stir from the public. Many parents have been writing that it is a “Terrible reflection on our society…” and “We should boycott this book”, etc. Health experts have weighed in and stated the main story-line does not reflect what really happens in the real world.

I want to get other’s opinion’s on this topic. My personal belief is that i don’t have a problem with this book. It is not saying that young kids should be skinny. It is trying to tell kids that when you eat healthy and exercise you will benefit from it. No child should assume that just because they loose weight they will become a star athlete. Parents of children need to guide them with this issue.
